Sam George announces major cut in MTN fibre broadband prices

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced a major reduction in MTN Ghana's fibre broadband prices, a move expected to significantly improve internet affordability for households and businesses across the country.

The announcement, made through a social media post on Wednesday, June 17, follows discussions between the government and MTN Ghana aimed at making high-speed internet services more accessible to Ghanaians amid growing demand for reliable broadband connectivity.

According to the minister, customers who previously paid GH¢987 for a one-month unlimited fibre package with speeds of up to 100 Mbps will now pay just GH¢299, representing a dramatic reduction in monthly broadband costs.

“Effective today, fibre broadband prices have crashed,” Mr. George stated, describing the development as a direct response to public concerns about the high cost of internet services in Ghana.

Under the newly introduced pricing structure, MTN Ghana customers can subscribe to an unlimited 100 Mbps fibre package for GH¢299 per month. Those requiring higher internet speeds can access an unlimited 300 Mbps package for GH¢444 monthly, while an unlimited 500 Mbps package is now available at GH¢999 per month.

The minister emphasized that the revised pricing model emerged from sustained engagement between government officials and MTN Ghana, following calls from consumers for more affordable, stable and dependable broadband services.

“You demanded. We engaged. MTN Ghana has responded,” he said, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring digital services remain affordable for citizens.

Mr. George also expressed appreciation to the telecommunications company's management and staff for responding positively to the government's concerns regarding internet affordability and service quality.

“I want to express my gratitude to the management and staff of MTN who have heeded our call for more affordable, stable and reliable fibre broadband,” he noted.

The minister further assured Ghanaians that the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations would continue working closely with telecom operators to improve service delivery, enhance network quality and introduce more consumer-friendly pricing models.

“From the Ministry, we will continue to push for better service packages for the Ghanaian people,” he added.

Industry observers believe the reduction could provide significant relief for households, small businesses, remote workers, students, content creators and technology startups that depend heavily on high-speed internet for daily operations. The move also aligns with broader efforts to accelerate digital transformation and expand internet adoption across the country.

The price cuts come at a time when demand for broadband connectivity continues to grow, driven by increased remote work, online education, digital commerce and content creation activities.

As of Wednesday, MTN Ghana had not issued a detailed statement outlining the terms and conditions of the revised fibre broadband packages, although customers are expected to receive further information through the company's official communication channels in the coming days.
