42 firms rush for keta port! -EPA Green Light Ignites Multi-Billion Cedi Investment Race as GPHA Targets 2027 Completion

The long-anticipated Keta Port and Harbour Project has taken a significant step toward becoming a reality after the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) secured the crucial Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permit required for the development of the project.

The milestone marks a major breakthrough for one of Ghana’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives and signals renewed confidence in efforts to transform the Volta Region into a leading maritime, trade, and industrial hub.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement, the Director-General of GPHA, Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, revealed that no fewer than 42 companies have already expressed interest in participating in the development of the proposed port, underscoring growing investor confidence in the project’s commercial potential.

According to him, the acquisition of the EPA permit clears a major regulatory hurdle and positions the Authority to advance discussions with potential investors and strategic partners.

“We have received permit for this project, and it will interest you to know that about 42 companies have so far expressed interest in developing the place,” Maj. Gen. Tanye-Kulono announced.

The development has been welcomed by traditional authorities, business leaders, residents, and stakeholders across the Volta Region, many of whom have advocated for the project for decades. For them, the environmental approval and strong investor interest represent the clearest indication yet that the vision of a modern deep-sea port in Keta is finally moving beyond the planning stage.

Industry experts believe the large number of interested companies reflects the strategic importance of the proposed port, which is expected to serve as a critical gateway for maritime trade along Ghana’s eastern coastline. Once completed, the facility is anticipated to complement existing ports in Tema and Takoradi, while improving logistics efficiency and expanding Ghana’s capacity to handle growing trade volumes.

The Keta Port Project is also expected to unlock substantial economic opportunities for the Volta Region and the country as a whole. Analysts project that the port could create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during both the construction and operational phases, while stimulating growth in sectors such as fisheries, shipping, transportation, warehousing, manufacturing, hospitality, and tourism.

In addition to boosting economic activity, the project is expected to attract local and foreign investment, support industrialisation efforts, and enhance Ghana’s position as a competitive maritime destination within the West African sub-region.

The proposed port forms part of broader efforts to decentralise economic development and reduce pressure on existing port infrastructure. By establishing a major logistics and commercial centre in Keta, authorities hope to create new opportunities for businesses and improve access to international markets for exporters and traders operating in the Volta and Oti regions.

Maj. Gen. Tanye-Kulono also reaffirmed GPHA’s commitment to completing the Keta Port Headquarters by January 2027. He assured stakeholders that construction works remain on schedule and that the Authority remains focused on meeting the agreed timeline.

The assurance follows a commitment previously made to the Awomefia of Anlo State, Togbui Sri III, regarding the delivery of the headquarters project.

With environmental clearance now secured, attention is expected to shift toward evaluating the 42 interested companies and identifying suitable partners to undertake various aspects of the port’s development. The next phase is likely to involve detailed technical assessments, investment negotiations, concession agreements, and infrastructure planning.

Observers believe that successful execution of the Keta Port Project could significantly reshape the economic landscape of the Volta Region, strengthen Ghana’s maritime competitiveness, and drive sustainable growth in coastal communities.

As investor interest continues to grow and key regulatory approvals fall into place, the Keta Port and Harbour Project appears closer than ever to becoming Ghana’s next major seaport development and a catalyst for regional transformation.
