Bank of Ghana denies reports it is considering sale of new US$260 million headquarters

The Bank of Ghana has firmly rejected reports suggesting it is considering the sale of its newly commissioned headquarters, describing the claims as "false and misleading."

In a statement issued on June 2, 2026, the central bank dismissed a report published by MyJoyOnline, which cited unnamed sources alleging that discussions were underway regarding a potential sale and leaseback arrangement involving its new headquarters, known as The Bank Square.

"The Bank of Ghana categorically states that this report is false and misleading. The Bank is not considering, discussing, or planning the sale of its new headquarters," the statement emphasized.

According to the central bank, The Bank Square remains a strategic asset that plays a vital role in supporting its operations and strengthening its ability to fulfill its statutory responsibilities.

The clarification follows reports claiming that the Bank and government officials were exploring options to dispose of the property as part of efforts to improve the institution’s balance sheet after recording significant financial losses in recent years.

The publication further suggested that opinions within the Bank’s board were divided on the alleged proposal, with some members supporting the idea while others opposed it.

However, the Bank of Ghana has categorically denied the existence of any such discussions.

The central bank warned that unverified reports concerning its operations could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s financial system and create unnecessary uncertainty within the market.

Commissioned in November 2024, The Bank Square officially became the Bank of Ghana’s operational headquarters in September 2025. The facility was constructed at a reported cost exceeding US$260 million and was presented as a long-term investment designed to serve the institution’s operational needs for decades.

The controversy emerges amid ongoing public discussions about the Bank’s financial position. The central bank reported a loss of GH¢15.6 billion in 2025, marking its second-largest annual loss since 2008, despite measures implemented to mitigate the impact on its balance sheet.

While a sale and leaseback arrangement could have generated debate about the disposal of a strategic national asset, the Bank's latest statement leaves little room for speculation.

The institution has urged the public to rely solely on official communications published through its website, verified social media platforms, releases from its Communications Department, and statements signed by the Secretary to the Bank.
