PURC collaborates with ECG and GRIDCo to ensure reliable power supply for consumers during 2026 FIFA World Cup

PURC collaborates with ECG and GRIDCo to ensure reliable power supply for consumers during 2026 FIFA World Cup

As anticipation builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intensified efforts to ensure reliable electricity supply across the country throughout the tournament period.

In a move aimed at preventing power disruptions during World Cup matches, the Commission held a strategic alignment meeting on June 9, 2026, with the leadership of the Ghana Grid Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana to review preparedness plans and coordinate operational measures for seamless electricity service delivery.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration among key stakeholders in Ghana’s power sector to guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply for households, businesses, and football fans during the global tournament.

The Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, outlined a comprehensive monitoring framework designed to ensure strict regulatory oversight and maintain high standards of service delivery throughout the competition.

According to the Commission, its Energy Services and Performance Monitoring (ESPM) and Regional Operations and Consumer Services (ROCS) Directorates will work closely to monitor power supply reliability and service quality nationwide.

As part of the strategy, PURC will also obtain direct contact details of key technical personnel from both ECG and GRIDCo to facilitate immediate intervention whenever operational challenges arise.

The Commission further directed the two utilities to maintain a joint stakeholder communication system to improve transparency and public accountability during the World Cup period.

Acting Managing Director of ECG, Kwame Kpekpena, outlined several operational measures aimed at ensuring rapid response to faults and maintaining network stability.

ECG will suspend all non-essential planned maintenance activities during the tournament period, limiting technical interventions to emergency fault repairs only.

Technical personnel and contractors will be strategically stationed near high-demand areas and critical installations to ensure swift response whenever faults occur.

The utility company will collaborate with national security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protect key electricity infrastructure from vandalism and other threats.

ECG will prioritise public updates and announcements to keep consumers informed and reassure them of prompt fault restoration whenever disruptions occur.

Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, Frank Otchere, also outlined several initiatives being implemented to strengthen the national transmission network ahead of the World Cup.

GRIDCo says identified hotspots and vulnerable sections of the transmission network are being addressed, while non-critical maintenance activities have been postponed to reduce operational risks.

The company is intensifying bush-clearing exercises along transmission corridors, an initiative that began in May 2026.

The exercise is intended to prevent trees and branches from falling onto transmission lines, which could trigger outages and affect power quality.

All major substations across the country will be physically manned around the clock during the tournament, with Area Managers deployed to facilitate the rapid resolution of any technical issues.

GRIDCo has also completed generation scheduling arrangements with power-producing companies to ensure adequate electricity supply throughout the World Cup period.

Dr. Suleman praised both ECG and GRIDCo for adopting what he described as proactive and consumer-focused strategies aimed at safeguarding electricity supply during one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.

He noted that the measures demonstrate a deliberate effort by utility providers to protect consumer interests and maintain public confidence in the power sector.

“This is a signal of intentional efforts to serve and protect the interest of the Ghanaian consumers,” he stated.

The PURC Executive Secretary further assured the public that the Commission remains committed to protecting consumer rights and will continue monitoring the operations of service providers throughout the tournament.

“The PURC remains fully committed to protecting consumer rights. The Commission will continue to monitor operations of the service providers and is on standby to address in a timely manner any unforeseen issues that may come up,” he assured.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup expected to attract millions of viewers globally, Ghana’s power sector regulators and utility providers are seeking to ensure that football fans across the country can enjoy the tournament without disruptions caused by power outages.
