The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has confirmed that trading activities will not be allowed on the Kaneshie Footbridge after ongoing rehabilitation works are completed.
The announcement was made by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, who reiterated the Assembly’s decision to permanently remove traders from the footbridge in the interest of public safety and order.
He explained that the AMA has already taken steps to support affected traders by facilitating their relocation to alternative trading spaces. According to him, the Mayor has personally engaged with traders and helped secure spaces for many of them in nearby markets, allowing them to continue their businesses in safer and more appropriate environments.
“I can assure you that when the bridge is completed, we will not allow traders on it as before. The mayor has personally engaged with the traders and supported their relocation. We have identified space for many of them in nearby markets, which will allow them to continue their businesses without compromising safety on the bridge,” he stated.
Mr. Ankrah further disclosed that the Assembly will enforce the no-trading directive through continuous monitoring and personnel deployment.
“Our men will be stationed there to prevent any form of illegal activities in the area, particularly trading on the bridge. This measure is to ensure the safety of pedestrians and uphold public order,” he added.
He made these remarks during an appearance on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on April 6.
The Kaneshie footbridge was closed on April 2 to allow for urgent rehabilitation following concerns about its structural condition. The AMA has indicated that the repair works will take several months and are aimed at improving the bridge’s durability, safety, and overall usability for pedestrians.
