Tensions escalated at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi as traders clashed with a task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly during an ongoing decongestion exercise aimed at removing unauthorized sellers from the facility.
The operation, launched by city authorities to restore order and improve safety within the market, was met with strong resistance from traders. Chaotic scenes unfolded as enforcement officers attempted to evict individuals operating outside designated trading spaces, leading to confrontations on the ground.
In recent months, the Kejetia Market has become a major concern due to severe overcrowding. The Federation of Kumasi Traders has warned that the facility is currently hosting more than 3,300 additional traders beyond its intended capacity, raising serious safety risks.
Traders have also pointed to structural defects within the market, describing the situation as a potential “death trap” if urgent interventions are not made to address the challenges.
However, the KMA insists that the decongestion exercise is necessary to ensure public safety, improve accessibility, and restore order within one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.
Despite these assurances, many traders have refused to comply with the eviction directives, resulting in ongoing tensions and clashes with authorities as enforcement efforts continue.
