The Electricity Company of Ghana has announced a temporary power curtailment affecting several communities across the Volta and Oti Regions following a fire outbreak at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company in Akosombo.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 27, ECG explained that the incident significantly disrupted power supply to the affected regions, forcing the company to implement load management measures to stabilize the system.
According to ECG, the fire outbreak at the Akosombo substation reduced the volume of electricity available for distribution, making it necessary to ration supply across multiple communities. As part of the load management plan, some areas experienced power interruptions between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm, while others were scheduled for outages between 6:00 pm and midnight.
The company indicated that the curtailment was essential to maintain grid stability and prevent a wider system failure that could have resulted in more extensive blackouts.
A wide range of communities were affected during the first phase of the outage, including Adidome Township, Akyemfo, Mafi Anfoe, Mepe Dagorme, Adexor, Battor Gbagbavuinu, Depe, Kpando Technical, and KPASEC. Additional areas impacted include Kpando Township, Kudzra, parts of Kpando, Ve Golokwati, Fume, parts of Nyagbo, Logba, and sections of Jasikan Township.
Other affected locations include Apenkwa, Bodada, Bowiri, Anfoeta, Dzolokpuita, Amedzofe, Dzologborgame, Kpedze, Shiave, Nyive, Matse, Klefe, Ziavi, and surrounding communities. Key installations such as Soldiers Barracks, Police Depot, and parts of Aflao Township and nearby border communities were also included in the outage schedule.
For the second phase, from 6:00 pm to midnight, areas such as Oklahoma, Lolobi, Likpe, Ayoma, Baglo, Lakanti, Buem Tetema, Akpafu Adorko, and Sogakope Township experienced interruptions. Several other towns, including Akatsi Township, Ave communities, Dzrakate, Abor, Tadzewu, and parts of Hohoe, were also affected.
The outages extended to additional communities such as Wli, Liati, Gbledi, Alavanyo, Nkonya, Keta, Kedzi, Agavedzi, Kadjebi, Nkwanta, and parts of Ho Township. Notably, sections of the University of Health and Allied Sciences main campus were also impacted by the temporary power cuts.
ECG emphasized that the power interruptions were a necessary response to reduced generation capacity caused by the fire incident. The company assured customers that restoration efforts were ongoing and that electricity supply would resume as soon as the voltage profile stabilizes.
“Affected customers should please note that immediately the voltage profile improves, power supply will be restored,” the statement noted.
The company also appealed for patience and understanding from residents and businesses affected by the outages, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the disruptions.
ECG further expressed regret over the situation and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply, stating that technical teams are working closely with GRIDCo to resolve the issue and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
