A convoy of the Ghana Armed Forces escorting about 140 civilians came under a deadly attack on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Binduri in the Upper East Region while travelling from Bawku towards Bolgatanga.
According to a statement issued by Naval Captain Veronica Arhin, the convoy was repeatedly fired upon by unidentified armed individuals, leading to the deaths of three civilians under military protection and leaving one other injured.
The statement confirmed that troops accompanying the convoy responded swiftly and were able to repel the attackers during the exchange of gunfire.
“In the process, the military successfully repulsed the attack on the convoy, resulting in the death of seven assailants,” the statement said.
Following the confrontation, the military launched a pursuit operation in the area. During the operation, troops reportedly retrieved weapons and ammunition from one of the suspects who attempted to hide in a nearby mosque. The recovered items included a G3 automatic rifle, two loaded magazines containing 20 rounds each, and 176 additional rounds of ammunition.
Security forces also arrested ten other suspects believed to be connected to the attack. The individuals are currently assisting investigators as part of ongoing efforts to determine the circumstances behind the incident and identify all those involved.
The Ghana Armed Forces cautioned the public and all groups within the affected areas to refrain from engaging or obstructing military and security operations, stressing the importance of cooperation in maintaining peace and order.
The military further extended its condolences to the families of the deceased civilians and assured the public of its commitment to restoring stability in the region. It also wished the injured victim a speedy recovery and reiterated its resolve to protect lives and maintain security along volatile corridors.
The incident adds to ongoing security concerns in the Bawku–Binduri–Bolgatanga corridor, an area that has experienced periodic tensions and violent confrontations in recent times, prompting increased military patrols and escort operations to safeguard civilians and transport routes.
