GES debunks viral claim that floodwaters destroyed WASSCE papers

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has dismissed as false a viral social media statement claiming that floodwaters destroyed West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers and that affected candidates would be required to rewrite the examinations.

The Service says the widely circulated statement is fake and urged students, parents, teachers and the general public to disregard it, stressing that no such announcement has been issued by GES.

The fake statement, which has been shared extensively across various social media platforms, alleged that the heavy rains and flooding on June 29 washed away some WASSCE examination papers, making them unavailable for the ongoing examinations.

It further claimed that the Ghana Education Service was considering organising a rewrite of the affected papers and would soon announce a revised examination timetable for candidates.

The false publication quickly generated anxiety among students and parents, many of whom questioned whether the ongoing examinations would be disrupted.

Responding to the viral claims, the Ghana Education Service categorically denied issuing any such statement.

GES emphasised that the purported notice did not originate from the Service and should not be regarded as authentic.

The Service therefore advised the public to ignore the misinformation and avoid circulating unverified content capable of causing unnecessary panic among candidates and their families.

GES also appealed to students, parents, school authorities and other stakeholders to verify information before sharing it on social media.

The Service encouraged the public to rely exclusively on its official communication platforms for accurate updates regarding the ongoing WASSCE examinations and other educational matters.

The latest clarification comes amid an increase in misinformation circulating online following the recent floods that affected parts of Greater Accra and other regions.

GES reiterated its commitment to providing timely and accurate information and urged the public to remain vigilant against fake news intended to mislead examination candidates and the general public.
