Haruna Iddrisu calls for arrest of Bole SHS teacher accused of sexual misconduct

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify efforts to locate and arrest a teacher at Bole Senior High School (SHS) who is accused of engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct involving a student in the school's science laboratory.

Describing the alleged incident as "unacceptable" and "shameful," the Minister urged investigators to ensure the suspect is apprehended and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent against similar misconduct within Ghana's education system.

Reports indicate that the teacher has fled the school and is believed to be hiding in neighbouring border communities.

Speaking at the 2026 Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) National School Awards on Thursday, July 9, Mr. Iddrisu said the Ministry of Education is closely monitoring the investigation and expects law enforcement authorities to handle the case with urgency and professionalism.

He stressed that the alleged conduct undermines the trust placed in teachers and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

"The incident in Bole is unacceptable and shameful. So, the Police, we are watching you and how you proceed with the investigation and how you go further to prosecution to deter that unacceptable behaviour and conduct of a teacher."

The Minister said the outcome of the case would send a strong message that individuals who abuse their positions of trust within educational institutions will be held accountable under the law.

Beyond the specific incident, Mr. Iddrisu directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strengthen disciplinary measures across schools nationwide.

He instructed education authorities to deal firmly with all forms of misconduct involving both teachers and students to safeguard the integrity of Ghana's education system.

According to the Minister, behaviour that falls below accepted professional and ethical standards must attract appropriate disciplinary and legal consequences.

He emphasised that schools should remain safe environments where students can pursue their education without fear of abuse, harassment or exploitation.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service has taken administrative action against the accused teacher by suspending the payment of his salary after he reportedly failed to report for duty following the alleged incident.

The salary suspension forms part of ongoing administrative measures while investigations continue.

Education authorities have not disclosed whether additional disciplinary proceedings will be initiated once the criminal investigation is concluded.

The Ghana Police Service is continuing investigations into the alleged incident as efforts intensify to locate and arrest the suspect.

Security agencies are reportedly pursuing leads suggesting that the accused teacher fled to neighbouring border towns shortly after the incident became public.

Authorities have yet to announce an arrest, but the Ministry of Education has indicated it expects investigators to move swiftly to ensure the suspect is brought before the courts.

The Ministry of Education reiterated its commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and personal development.

The Minister stressed that protecting students from abuse remains a top priority and warned that any teacher or school official found engaging in inappropriate conduct would face both disciplinary action and prosecution where criminal offences are established.

He added that strengthening accountability within schools is essential to maintaining public confidence in Ghana's education system and preserving the professionalism expected of teachers across the country.
