Police probe alleged assault of Amaniampong SHS student over church service refusal

Police in Mampongteng in the Ashanti Region are investigating a disturbing case involving the alleged assault of a final-year student of Amaniampong Senior High School by a senior housemaster after a disagreement over attendance at a compulsory religious programme.

The victim, Emmanuel Kwarteng, is reported to have sustained serious injuries following the incident, which allegedly occurred after he refused to participate in an all-night church service organised on campus.

According to accounts gathered from the family and eyewitness reports, the confrontation escalated in the student’s dormitory when the housemaster, identified as Gyamfi Charles of Asenso House, confronted him over his refusal to attend the religious activity. The disagreement reportedly turned physical, leading to what has been described as a severe assault.

Graphic photos and videos circulating on social media show the student on the ground with visible injuries, including damage to his eye, sparking widespread public concern and debate over student safety and disciplinary practices in schools.

The matter has since been reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing pending a medical report from health officials. Emmanuel is currently receiving treatment at the Ejisu Government Hospital.

The family of the victim has called for swift action, demanding the interdiction of the teacher involved and compensation for the injuries sustained, while stressing that disciplinary measures should not result in violence.

“No student deserves to be treated this way, regardless of the circumstances,” the victim’s mother, Vida Kwarteng, stated, expressing deep concern over her son’s condition.

The father, Tony Kofi Kwarteng, confirmed that the case has been formally lodged with the police, noting that a medical report has been prepared and will be submitted to assist investigations.

“The police requested a medical report, and we have obtained it from the hospital. It will be forwarded to the authorities,” he said.

School authorities have also acknowledged the incident, stating that a formal report has been submitted to the Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), along with recommendations for possible disciplinary action.

Assistant Headmaster in charge of Administration, Prempeh William Osei, indicated that the school is cooperating fully with investigations and prioritising the student’s recovery.

“There is a GES structure, and we have submitted our report to the municipality and regional office. Our focus is on the student’s recovery and well-being,” he said.

The Ghana Education Service and police are expected to determine the next steps as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
