A fire outbreak was reported at Tudu in Accra on the evening of June 3, prompting a swift response from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other emergency agencies.
The blaze occurred near the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, with firefighters working for hours to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings and critical facilities.
The cause of the fire has not yet been officially established, although authorities suspect an electrical fault may have triggered the incident.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, a GNFS officer, Alex King Nartey, said the primary objective of firefighters was to contain the blaze and protect surrounding properties.
“The Ghana Commercial Bank is near; the Ghana Water Company office is also close. We want to protect all these facilities,” he said.
According to him, some traders affected by the fire managed to salvage portions of their goods before the flames intensified.
Mr. Nartey disclosed that one firefighter sustained serious injuries during efforts to contain the blaze and was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
“He suffered a life-threatening injury and has been sent to the hospital for treatment. Other officers are experiencing electrical shocks when they enter to put out the fire,” he stated.
The GNFS officer also highlighted challenges encountered during the operation, noting that the area had only one fire hydrant available to support firefighting efforts.
“Unfortunately, there is only one fire hydrant here,” he lamented.
Despite the challenges, firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to adjacent structures and businesses.
Emergency responders remained at the scene to fully extinguish the fire and assess the extent of damage. Investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of the incident.
