An unemployed graduate who demonstrated remarkable honesty after finding GH¢4,000 at a Fidelity Bank ATM has been rewarded with GH¢10,000 by the bank in recognition of his integrity.
For nine months, Emmanuel Appiah Boateng had been searching for employment while supporting his family and navigating the financial challenges that come with unemployment. Despite his circumstances, he chose honesty over personal gain when he discovered cash left behind at a Fidelity Bank ATM in Oyarifa, Accra.
The incident occurred in April when Emmanuel visited the bank's Oyarifa branch to withdraw money using his wife's bank card. After encountering an out-of-service ATM at another location, he decided to try the Oyarifa branch, where he unexpectedly found GH¢4,000 sitting in the machine's cash tray.
Faced with the temptation to keep the money, especially during a period of financial hardship, Emmanuel instead contacted Fidelity Bank's Customer Contact Centre to report the discovery.
"I immediately called the Fidelity helpline to report it," he recounted.
Following instructions from the bank, he safely secured the cash over the weekend and returned to the branch on the next working day to hand over the full amount, enabling the money to be traced and returned to its rightful owner.
Bank officials praised Emmanuel's actions, describing his honesty as exceptional, particularly at a time when many families are struggling with economic pressures and the rising cost of living.
"Your decision comes at a time when many households are facing financial difficulties, making your honesty even more striking," a bank official told him.
Emmanuel's educational background reflects his determination and commitment to personal development. He is an alumnus of Opoku Ware School and holds a master's degree in Cybersecurity, a bachelor's degree in Information Technology, and a professional certification in Project Management.
Moved by his integrity, Fidelity Bank later presented Emmanuel with a cash reward of GH¢10,000, more than double the amount he returned.
In a statement, the bank commended his actions and highlighted the importance of integrity in society.
"Mr. Boateng found GHS 4,000 at one of the Bank's ATMs and immediately contacted our Customer Contact Centre, ensuring that the money was returned to its rightful owner.
"At a time when integrity is often spoken about, his actions served as a powerful reminder of its value.
"We congratulate Mr. Boateng and celebrate the character and honesty he has demonstrated."
The story has resonated with many Ghanaians as a powerful example of integrity, proving that doing the right thing can have a lasting impact even in difficult circumstances.
For Emmanuel Appiah Boateng, the reward was a welcome blessing, but his actions have become an even greater testament to the enduring value of honesty, responsibility and good character.
