Gov’t to provide temporary relief for victims of Police Barracks fire – Muntaka

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has assured families displaced by the recent fire outbreak at the Police Barracks opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in Accra Central that government support is on the way.

The assurance was given during a visit to the scene on Thursday, June 4, where the minister assessed the extent of the damage and interacted with affected residents.

The fire destroyed sections of the barracks, displacing several families and causing significant damage to personal belongings and property.

Muntaka was accompanied by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service as part of efforts to evaluate the situation and coordinate support for victims.

Addressing residents, the Interior Minister expressed sympathy to those affected and reaffirmed the government's commitment to assisting them through the recovery process.

According to him, arrangements are being made to provide temporary accommodation for displaced families while plans are developed to reconstruct the damaged barracks.

“The visit was to assess the situation firsthand, interact with affected residents, and assure them of the government’s commitment to supporting them in this difficult period,” Muntaka stated in a Facebook post.

“I informed the displaced families that arrangements are being made to provide temporary accommodation while plans for the reconstruction of the barracks are being finalised.”

The minister further disclosed that victims would receive cash support, clothing, and other essential relief items through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to help ease their immediate hardships.

“In addition, victims will receive cash assistance, clothing, and other relief items through NADMO,” he added.

Although emergency response teams successfully contained the blaze, many residents lost valuable possessions and are now facing the challenge of rebuilding their lives.

As part of his visit, Muntaka also visited a police officer who sustained injuries during the fire incident and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Police Hospital.

Authorities are expected to continue assessing the full extent of the damage while recovery and reconstruction plans are being finalized for the affected families.
