Nine public officers have been arrested following a major drug interception at Tema Port that exposed one of the largest undeclared
Tramadol consignments recorded in recent years.
The arrests come after the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) seized a container carrying 299 cartons of Tramadol Hydrochloride tablets. The shipment contained 146,932,000 tablets in 250mg and 225mg strengths, with a total weight of approximately 34,847.2 kilogrammes.
Those arrested include five Customs officers, one officer from the Narcotics Control Commission, one Port Security officer, one Energy Commission officer and one officer from the Standards Authority. All nine individuals have been granted police inquiry bail as investigations proceed.
Customs officials disclosed that the operation was intelligence-led. The container, numbered TGHU6228715 and cleared under Bill of Entry 40226151187, was flagged by the Preventive wing of the Customs Division and detained on February 26, 2026. It was subsequently transferred to a Customs-controlled area for detailed examination.
Although the shipment had been declared as household goods, including water kettles, kitchen blenders, pressing irons and energy-saving bulbs, a joint re-examination conducted on March 1 uncovered large quantities of concealed and undeclared Tramadol tablets hidden among the items.
Authorities have handed the importer and declarant over to the Police to assist with ongoing investigations, while the seized drugs remain secured under Customs control pending further action.
Officials say the interception underscores continued efforts to safeguard public health, strengthen border security and protect the integrity of Ghana’s revenue systems.
