Oti Region: Two people confirmed dead in an accident at Nkonya

The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that tow people have died in an accident that that occurred at Nkonya in the Oti Region. The Service says the incident has raised renewed concerns about road safety on major intercity routes, particularly those connecting the southern and northern parts of the country.

The Service explained that the fatal vehicular accident occurred at Nkonya Bumbula in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region when a 50-seater bus travelling from Accra to Salaga overturned. The route is a major transit corridor frequently used by long-distance passenger buses.

This was after a suspected tyre burst and overspeeding at a curve, a statement issued by the Fire Service said. Authorities indicated that preliminary assessments suggest the combination of high speed and a sudden tyre failure contributed to the driver losing control of the vehicle at a critical bend in the road.

‎‎The officers responded swiftly, rescuing victims and handing the injured over to ambulance service for treatment at Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital. Emergency response teams worked in coordination to ensure survivors received urgent medical attention.

‎‎Two people were confirmed dead, while others sustained injuries. Firefighters later worked to clear the road and restore traffic flow, preventing further congestion and ensuring that the route remained passable for other motorists. The accident temporarily disrupted movement along the stretch, as emergency crews managed rescue and recovery operations.

Road safety officials continue to caution drivers to observe speed limits, especially on sharp curves and long-distance routes, while urging regular vehicle maintenance to reduce the risk of tyre-related accidents. Investigations are expected to continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
