Two people are feared dead, and 28 others have been rescued following a fatal accident at Kwashieman in Accra on the eve of Good Friday. The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, especially as it occurred during a significant religious period when many were preparing for Easter activities.
The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. when a church bus travelling from Takoradi collided with a truck carrying onions and yams en route to the Gomoa Dominase Onion Market. The early morning timing meant visibility may have been limited, and the roads relatively quiet, which often leads to higher driving speeds.
Reports indicate the bus was branching toward Sowutuom when the speeding truck, despite warning horns, crashed into it. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the truck driver attempted to alert the bus driver but was unable to avoid the collision, leading to the devastating impact.
A National Ambulance Service crew from Ablekuma North swiftly responded to the emergency, arriving at the scene shortly after the crash. Their prompt intervention played a crucial role in rescuing survivors and providing immediate medical assistance.
The injured victims were transported to nearby health facilities, with 20 taken to Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital and eight to the Ablekuma North Polyclinic for urgent treatment. Medical personnel at both facilities worked quickly to stabilise patients, some of whom were reported to be in critical condition.
Residents and eyewitnesses have praised the ambulance crew for their timely and professional rescue efforts, noting that their rapid response helped save lives and prevent the situation from becoming even more catastrophic. The incident has also renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement and caution among drivers, particularly during early morning hours.
