Ghanaian nurses to be sent to Saint Kitts and Nevis to enjoy legally protected enhanced salaries - Ablakwa

Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis have signed an additional bilateral labour agreement aimed at strengthening the employment conditions and protections for Ghanaian nurses working in the Caribbean nation.

Under the agreement, Ghanaian nurses recruited to work in Saint Kitts and Nevis will benefit from legally protected enhanced salaries, health insurance, rent allowances, end-of-service benefits and other labour rights.

The agreement was signed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr Geoffrey Hanley, on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mr Ablakwa said the agreement reflects Ghana’s commitment to pursuing what he described as impactful diplomacy that delivers tangible benefits to Ghanaians.

“Ghana will continue to pursue impactful diplomacy which benefits the people we serve,” he said.

He also commended Ghanaian professionals for their contribution to countries around the world, noting that the expertise of Ghanaian professionals continues to attract international demand.

“Long live our excellent Ghana-Saint Kitts and Nevis relations,” the Foreign Affairs Minister added in a post on Facebook.

The latest agreement builds on a bilateral labour framework signed by Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis in March 2026 for the voluntary recruitment and temporary deployment of Ghanaian medical professionals to support the Caribbean country’s healthcare sector.

The March agreement established a formal pathway for the recruitment of Ghanaian health professionals, with Saint Kitts and Nevis seeking to strengthen its healthcare workforce while creating structured employment opportunities for qualified Ghanaian practitioners.

The partnership has since resulted in the deployment of Ghanaian nurses to Saint Kitts and Nevis. The government of Saint Kitts and Nevis reported in September that 47 trained Ghanaian nurses had arrived in the country and were contributing to healthcare delivery in hospitals and clinics.

The expanded labour cooperation forms part of broader efforts by Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis to deepen bilateral relations. The two countries also signed agreements in March 2026 covering political consultations and visa exemptions for holders of ordinary passports.

The strengthened labour arrangements are expected to provide a more structured framework for the overseas deployment of Ghanaian nurses while setting out protections governing their employment and welfare in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
