He explained that the hospital’s strategic and unique position within the healthcare system makes it an indispensable referral centre, but at the same time places immense and growing pressure on its resources, personnel, and infrastructure. According to him, the facility serves not only the Ashanti Region but also a vast catchment area that spans several neighbouring regions, making it a critical hub for specialised and advanced medical care. Patients who cannot be treated at district and regional hospitals are routinely transferred there, often arriving in critical condition and requiring immediate attention.

“Because in Komfo Anokye, it is the only tertiary facility in the Ashanti region, and also for quite a big distance,” he noted, underscoring the absence of comparable high-level medical facilities within a wide geographical radius. This means that the hospital functions as a lifeline for millions of people, many of whom must travel long distances to access specialist services such as surgery, emergency care, and intensive treatment.

He further elaborated that this situation has resulted in a constant and increasing influx of patients, which continues to stretch the hospital beyond its intended capacity. Wards are often overcrowded, medical staff are required to work under intense pressure, and essential resources such as beds, equipment, and supplies are frequently in high demand. The high volume of referrals, he said, not only places a strain on healthcare workers but can also lead to longer waiting times and delays in treatment for some patients.

According to him, the growing burden highlights systemic challenges within the broader healthcare network, including limited infrastructure at lower-level facilities and inadequate distribution of specialised services across the country. He stressed that without significant investment in expanding tertiary care and strengthening regional and district hospitals, the pressure on the facility will continue to escalate.

In addition, he pointed out that addressing the issue would require a multi-faceted approach, including the construction of more advanced healthcare centres, improved medical logistics and referral systems, and increased recruitment and training of healthcare professionals. Such measures, he suggested, would help decentralise specialised care, reduce the volume of referrals, and ultimately improve patient outcomes while easing the strain on the hospital.
