The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned comments made by political commentator Kevin Ekow Taylor against former President John Agyekum Kufuor, describing the remarks as “vicious” and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 8, the NPP accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of remaining silent despite what the party considers serious verbal attacks against a respected former head of state.
“This is not politics. This is desecration,” the statement declared.
The opposition party praised former President Kufuor for what it described as his significant contributions to Ghana’s political and economic development during his tenure in office.
According to the NPP, Mr. Kufuor played a major role in stabilising Ghana’s economy, strengthening democratic governance, and enhancing the country’s international reputation.
“President Kufuor rescued this nation from economic collapse, strengthened our democracy, and earned the admiration of Ghana and the world. He is not a partisan target; he is a father of this nation,” the statement noted.
The NPP further argued that the continued silence of the NDC leadership regarding the comments could be interpreted as tacit approval, especially given what it described as Kevin Taylor’s known association with the governing party.
“When a known operative verbally assaults a former President and the leadership of the NDC watches in silence, their silence becomes an endorsement,” the statement added.
The party is therefore demanding that President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC publicly distance themselves from the remarks and condemn the attacks on the former President.

Additionally, the NPP has called on Kevin Taylor to issue what it termed a “full, unqualified, and public apology” to former President Kufuor.
According to the party, while political disagreements are part of democratic discourse, there should be clear limits regarding public attacks on former national leaders.
“The NDC must decide whether it will stand with our shared cultural values or with the savagery of Kevin Taylor,” the statement concluded.
The development has further intensified political tensions between the NPP and NDC as debate over political commentary and public discourse continues to dominate Ghana’s political landscape.
