Samson Asaki Awingobit, National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party over comments threatening to “weaponise” the party’s youth to make the country ungovernable.
Mr Awingobit described the remarks allegedly made by Salam Mustapha as reckless, dangerous, and a serious threat to national peace and security.
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi following a meeting with regional chairmen of the PNC, the party leader urged the government, the National Security Coordinator, the Ghana Police Service, and other security agencies to take swift action against political actors whose public statements could incite violence or threaten democratic stability.
“We want them to put such a person before the law court. He should be immediately arrested,” Mr Awingobit stated.
According to him, political leaders and public figures must exercise restraint and speak responsibly, particularly within a democratic system governed by the 1992 Constitution.
The PNC Chairman said the party was deeply concerned about recent political rhetoric from some opposition figures, warning that inflammatory statements, if left unchecked, could undermine Ghana’s peace and stability.
Referencing the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, he cautioned against the dangers of irresponsible political communication, stressing that history has shown how provocative statements by influential individuals can escalate into national crises.
Mr Awingobit also pointed to recent exercises conducted by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, during which illegal weapons were reportedly retrieved from civilians. He argued that threats involving weapons and violence should never be dismissed as ordinary political talk.
The PNC leader further condemned separate comments allegedly made by a communications member of the NPP threatening attacks on the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Congress should opposition members face arrests.
“These are reckless statements. It should not come from leadership of a bigger political party like the NPP,” he stressed.
Mr Awingobit maintained that no political group or individual should consider themselves more powerful than the state, urging authorities to apply the law fairly and without political bias.
He said the PNC, as a political party committed to national unity, democratic governance, and peaceful coexistence, could not remain silent on issues capable of threatening the country’s security and stability.
The press conference followed a closed-door meeting between the national leadership of the PNC and the party’s regional chairmen to discuss internal challenges, party restructuring, and strategies aimed at revitalising its grassroots support base ahead of the 2028 general elections.
