Security concerns force NDC Chair Asiedu Nketiah to suspend North East ‘Thank You Tour’

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has suspended his planned “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region due to escalating security concerns following a recent attack on a military convoy in Bawku.

A senior official from the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) disclosed to JoyNews that the decision came after extensive consultations among security agencies. The move was prompted by a worsening security situation, particularly after a violent incident in Binduri, where unidentified gunmen reportedly launched an attack on a military escort convoy. The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of public officials and civilians in the area.

The now-cancelled two-day tour was scheduled to commence on April 29, with visits to key constituencies including Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu. The Chairman was also expected to continue his engagements on April 30 in Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.

According to the REGSEC source, security agencies strongly advised against proceeding with the tour as a precautionary measure to protect the NDC National Chairman, party members, and the general public. The official emphasized that disturbances in one area often have ripple effects across neighboring communities, increasing the risk of further instability.

“Anytime there are disturbances, there are spillover effects. To be safe, we have decided to suspend the trip and focus on identifying a lasting solution to these challenges,” the source explained. The official further noted that while the situation remains serious, other important engagements will continue as planned.

The “Thank You Tour” was part of Mr. Asiedu Nketiah’s broader post-election outreach initiative, aimed at expressing gratitude to party supporters for their loyalty, dedication, and contributions during the electoral period. The suspension has, however, caused disappointment among party faithful in the six constituencies, many of whom had made elaborate preparations to welocome the Chairman.

The Bawku enclave and surrounding areas have experienced recurring outbreaks of violence in recent months, largely linked to longstanding tensions. The latest attack on military personnel has further heightened anxiety, prompting increased security presence and vigilance across parts of the North East and Upper East regions.

As of now, the NDC leadership has not announced new dates for the postponed tour. Authorities are urging residents and party supporters to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to stabilize the region and prevent further escalation.
