Gov’t releases funds to clear scholarship arrears for Ghanaian students abroad

The Ghana Scholarships Authority has officially announced the release of first-quarter funds aimed at settling outstanding scholarship arrears owed to Ghanaian students studying abroad. The development comes amid growing concerns over delayed payments that have affected numerous beneficiaries across different countries.

In a statement issued on April 16 and signed by the Director-General, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, the Authority disclosed that the funds will primarily be used to address delays in the payment of stipends and tuition fees. These delays have particularly impacted students studying in the United Kingdom and several other international destinations where Ghanaian scholars are enrolled in various academic programmes.

According to the Authority, this intervention forms part of broader government efforts to progressively clear the backlog of unpaid scholarship obligations. The move is also intended to restore confidence and stability in the administration of Ghana’s scholarship scheme, which has faced criticism in recent months due to persistent delays in disbursement.

The statement acknowledged the significant challenges faced by affected students, many of whom have struggled to meet basic living expenses and academic requirements due to the delayed payments. The Authority expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and recognised the emotional and financial strain placed on students and their families during this period.

Recent reports indicate that several Ghanaian students abroad—especially those based in the UK—have experienced prolonged delays in receiving financial support. These delays have led to serious academic and financial difficulties, including challenges in paying tuition fees, accommodation costs, and other essential expenses. In some cases, students have reportedly faced the risk of suspension from their institutions or have had to rely on personal loans and support from friends to continue their studies.

The Authority further clarified that the released funds will undergo the required administrative procedures and public financial management processes before being disbursed to beneficiaries. This step is necessary to ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance with government financial regulations.

In its assurance to stakeholders, the Authority noted that it is working closely with relevant government agencies and partners to expedite the payment process. “The Authority is working diligently with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that these payments are processed promptly and that such delays are minimised going forward,” the statement emphasised.

Beneficiaries have been encouraged to remain calm and continue focusing on their academic pursuits while the necessary steps are taken to resolve all outstanding obligations. The Authority reassured students that efforts are being intensified to ensure that payments reach them as soon as possible.

Additionally, the Authority reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian students studying abroad. It emphasised that the release of these funds signals a renewed determination to address longstanding inefficiencies within the scholarship system and improve the overall management of the programme.

The statement concluded with an expression of appreciation to affected students for their patience, resilience, and cooperation throughout the period of delay, while assuring them of the government’s continued support in their academic journeys.
