The Government of Ghana has expressed appreciation to the authorities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for supporting Ghanaian nationals affected by the recent Middle East conflict.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said all Ghanaian victims injured during the crisis in the UAE are recovering well and receiving the necessary care and support.
Speaking during his working visit to the UAE, Mr Ablakwa revealed that he had personally checked on the welfare of Ghanaians affected by the conflict and was encouraged by their recovery progress.
He specifically mentioned meeting Philip Degbevi, who reportedly sustained injuries during a missile attack at the Dubai International Airport.
“Really happy to have met Philip Degbevi and to see that he has made a full recovery after sustaining injuries from a missile attack at the Dubai Airport,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated.
Mr Ablakwa further disclosed that all three Ghanaians injured in the UAE during the recent hostilities are recovering steadily.
“I am equally glad to report that all three Ghanaians who were injured in the UAE as a result of the recent Middle East conflict are recovering quite well,” he said.
The minister praised UAE authorities for the assistance and compassion shown to the Ghanaian victims during the difficult period.
“The Government of Ghana commends UAE authorities for their kind support for all the Ghanaian victims,” he added.
According to Mr Ablakwa, the Government of Ghana is also committed to ensuring that all affected victims receive adequate compensation for the injuries and hardships suffered during the conflict.
“We are committed to ensuring that all victims are adequately compensated,” he assured.
He emphasized that the administration of President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to extending consular support, protection, and empathy to Ghanaians living across Gulf countries amid the heightened regional tensions.
“The Mahama Administration is determined to extend consular assistance and empathy to the victims and all Ghanaians living in the Gulf countries at this period of heightened hostilities,” he stated.
During his visit, Mr Ablakwa also held discussions with leaders of the Ghanaian community in the UAE and reassured them of the Ghanaian government’s solidarity and support during the ongoing regional uncertainty.
He revealed that approximately 60,000 Ghanaians currently live and work in the UAE across different professional sectors, including aviation, engineering, education, business, domestic services, and hospitality.
“There are about 60,000 Ghanaians living in the UAE with varying backgrounds including pilots, engineers, teachers, business executives, domestic workers and hospitality professionals,” he noted.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also commended Ghana’s diplomatic representatives in the UAE for their efforts in supporting citizens and coordinating assistance during the crisis.
“I commend our Ambassador and the Consul General for the great job they are doing,” he said.
