President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Ms Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, Esq., as Deputy Chairpersons of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), filling key leadership positions at the electoral management body.
The two appointments are expected to strengthen the Commission’s leadership and support its constitutional mandate of organising and supervising transparent, credible and peaceful elections in Ghana.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, with both appointees bringing experience in public administration, law, finance and the internal operations of the Electoral Commission.
Ms Emelia Afi Agbenyo, who serves as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, has been appointed to serve as one of the Commission’s Deputy Chairpersons.
Her background in administration and operations is expected to contribute to the Commission’s management and institutional responsibilities.
Her appointment comes at a time when the Electoral Commission is seeking to maintain effective leadership and operational coordination in the discharge of its electoral responsibilities.
Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), also joins the Commission’s senior leadership.
Dr Asamoah previously worked with the Electoral Commission, serving as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.
His previous roles have given him experience in the Commission’s financial management, staff training, auditing and administrative systems.
His return to the institution is expected to provide leadership experience and familiarity with its internal structures as the Commission continues to carry out its constitutional functions.
The appointments follow two significant changes in the Commission’s leadership.
Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Services, resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academic work at the University of Ghana.
Meanwhile, Mr Samuel Tettey, the former Deputy Chairperson responsible for Operations, proceeded on compulsory retirement.
The departures created vacancies in the Commission’s leadership, making the appointment of new deputy chairpersons an important step in maintaining its administrative and operational structure.
The Electoral Commission is constitutionally mandated to organise and supervise public elections and referenda in Ghana. Its leadership plays a critical role in ensuring that electoral processes are administered effectively and that public confidence in the electoral system is maintained.
The appointment of Ms Agbenyo and Dr Asamoah adds administrative, legal and institutional experience to the Commission’s leadership.
Their performance will be closely linked to the Commission’s ability to manage its responsibilities, strengthen internal systems and sustain public confidence in the electoral process.
The swearing-in of the two Deputy Chairpersons marks a new chapter in the Commission’s leadership as Ghana continues to uphold its constitutional and democratic institutions.
