We’ve failed to secure bail for Asante Akyem North MP; extradition hearing set for November 18 - Dafeamekpor

The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, remains in custody in Amsterdam after efforts by the Majority to secure bail for him were unsuccessful, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has disclosed.

Speaking at a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Dafeamekpor said the MP was still being held in the Netherlands, with an extradition hearing scheduled to begin on November 18.

“We’ve failed to secure bail for Asante Akyem North MP; so, he is still in Amsterdam in custody. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the extradition hearing will begin on 18th November, 2026,” he said.

He also dismissed reports circulating that the legislator had already been transferred to the United States.

“He has not been taken to the US as is being circulated around,” Dafeamekpor added.

The scheduled hearing is expected to consider extradition proceedings involving the Ghanaian lawmaker. Dafeamekpor did not provide further details about the bail efforts or the specific circumstances surrounding the MP’s detention.

Kwame Ohene Frimpong was previously reported to have been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

In a Facebook post on May 12, Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Djietror said Parliament had been informed of the legislator’s detention.

The statement indicated that the Speaker and parliamentary leadership were in contact with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to obtain further information and said the public would be updated appropriately.

Ohene Frimpong is a Ghanaian entrepreneur and politician who contested the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

He won the Asante Akyem North seat, defeating the incumbent MP, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.

The MP remains in custody in the Netherlands as he awaits the scheduled extradition hearing. Further details about the proceedings and the basis for the extradition request have not been provided in the statements cited.
