Ghana Immigration Service rescues 112 victims of human trafficking; 105 returned to their home countries

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has repatriated 105 foreign nationals to their respective home countries following an intelligence-led operation in Asankragwa that uncovered a suspected human trafficking network.

According to a statement signed by DSI Barbara Sam on June 1, the operation was conducted on May 20, 2026, by the Asankragwa Sector Command under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Kwabena Adjei.

The raid targeted locations suspected of accommodating individuals involved in commercial sex activities within the area. During the operation, immigration officers apprehended 112 foreign nationals believed to have been trafficked into Ghana.

Initial screening revealed that the group consisted of 110 Nigerian nationals, one Beninese, and one Cameroonian, all females aged between 12 and 38 years. The individuals were subsequently transferred to a holding facility in the Greater Accra Region for further investigations and processing.

The GIS disclosed that detailed investigations carried out by its Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons (AHSTIP) Unit identified seven suspects linked to the operation, while 105 individuals were confirmed as victims of human trafficking.

Working in collaboration with relevant embassies and representatives of the Cameroonian community in Ghana, the National Operations Department of the GIS facilitated the safe return of the victims to their countries of origin.

The seven suspects remain under investigation and may face prosecution if found guilty of offences related to human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Basintale Amadu, urged foreign nationals residing in Ghana to comply with the country's immigration and criminal laws. He reaffirmed the Service's commitment to working with other security agencies to combat human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and other transnational crimes while protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
