Patience Akyianu, former Barclays Bank Ghana MD and Hollard Group CEO, reported dead

Patience Enyonam Akyianu, former Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana and Group Chief Executive Officer of Hollard Ghana Holdings, has reportedly passed away.

The news marks the reported loss of one of Ghana’s prominent banking and insurance executives, whose career spanned more than two decades across financial services, corporate leadership and boardroom roles.

The circumstances surrounding her reported death have not been independently confirmed. However, CEO Network Ghana announced her passing in a statement, describing her as a “dear friend and distinguished CEO.”

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and distinguished CEO, Patience Akyianu, Group CEO of Hollard Holdings,” the organisation said.

The network extended its condolences to her family, colleagues, friends and loved ones, adding that further details would be shared as they were received from the family.

Mrs Akyianu built much of her professional career in banking, rising through senior financial and executive positions before becoming Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana.

She previously served as Finance Director of the bank before taking over as Managing Director, a position she held for five years.

A profile published by the Ghana Stock Exchange indicated that she had more than 26 years of experience in banking and finance, including 17 years in the banking industry before moving into insurance in 2018.

She held an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, specialising in Accounting, from the University of Ghana Business School. She was also a professional accountant and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana.

In October 2018, Mrs Akyianu left Barclays Bank Ghana to become the first Group Chief Executive Officer of Hollard Ghana Holdings.

Her appointment followed Hollard’s expansion in Ghana, which brought together Hollard Insurance Ghana, formerly Metropolitan Insurance, and Hollard Life Assurance Ghana.

As the group’s inaugural CEO, she was responsible for its growth strategy and efforts to expand insurance access while developing customer-focused products and services.

Reflecting on her transition from banking to insurance in 2021, Mrs Akyianu described the move as a “leap of faith.” She said she was attracted by the opportunity to build Hollard into a household name in Ghana despite having relatively limited experience in the insurance industry.

“I saw a great brand with a great purpose, a great vision, and a great business ethos,” she wrote.

Her tenure at Hollard was associated with efforts to expand distribution channels, introduce digital insurance solutions and improve customer experience.

Mrs Akyianu received several honours during her career in Ghana’s financial services sector.

In May 2025, she received the Millennium Excellence Award for Finance and Capital Market Excellence at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The award recognised her leadership at Barclays Bank Ghana and Hollard Ghana, as well as her contribution to Ghana’s finance and capital markets. The citation also highlighted her role in the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards at Standard Chartered Bank and Barclays Bank Ghana.

Beyond her executive positions, Mrs Akyianu served on several corporate boards. She was also a founding member of the Executive Women Network and the International Women’s Forum, Ghana. The Ghana Stock Exchange profile also listed her among directors associated with organisations including Hollard Ghana, Hubtel and other corporate bodies.

At Hollard Ghana, Mrs Akyianu championed initiatives aimed at making insurance more accessible to individuals and businesses, particularly underserved segments of the market.

One notable initiative was the Asomdwee insurance product, launched in partnership with the Ghana Enterprises Agency in 2021 to provide tailored insurance coverage for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

The initiative formed part of broader efforts under her leadership to support business owners, protect their assets against unexpected events and expand insurance penetration.

Her tenure also coincided with investments in new distribution channels, digital solutions and customer-focused insurance services.

Mrs Akyianu’s professional journey took her from senior banking and finance positions to the leadership of one of Ghana’s major insurance groups.

Her reported death has prompted expressions of grief within Ghana’s business community, with colleagues and professional networks mourning a corporate leader whose career bridged banking, insurance, governance and professional mentorship.

Further details concerning her death and funeral arrangements are expected from her family.
