Akuapem North Member of Parliament and former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of using state institutions to harass and intimidate opposition figures following the reported arrest of NPP communications team member Dennis Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
In a Facebook post on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Mr Awuku questioned the timing of the reported arrest, noting that it came only hours after Mr Aboagye publicly announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP.
Barely hours after declaring his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP, Dennis Miracles Aboagye finds himself in EOCO custody. Coincidence? Perhaps," he wrote.
Mr Awuku argued that the reported arrest forms part of what he described as a worrying trend in which opposition communicators and government critics are increasingly being targeted.
According to him, the role of an opposition party in a democratic system is to hold the government accountable without fear of intimidation or political interference.
It is becoming increasingly alarming to see opposition communicators suppressed, harassed and intimidated whenever they hold the government accountable," he stated.
He further claimed that the alleged pattern extends beyond politicians to ordinary citizens who express critical opinions on social media.
From party communicators to TikTokers and social media activists, a troubling pattern appears to be emerging. Is the ruling party truly unsettled with criticisms?" he asked.
While insisting that the law should take its course where necessary, the former NPP National Organiser maintained that any allegations against Mr Aboagye should be handled transparently through the judicial system.
"If Miracles has broken the law, let the charges be made known and let the courts decide. If not, he should be released," he stated.
He concluded his remarks with a caution about the importance of accountability in governance.
"Governments come and go, but posterity remains, and it never forgets."
The comments come after reports emerged that Dennis Miracles Aboagye had been taken into EOCO custody. However, the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest remain unclear.
As of the time of publication, the Economic and Organised Crime Office had not publicly disclosed the reasons for Mr Aboagye's detention or announced any charges against him
The reported arrest has triggered strong reactions within the New Patriotic Party, with several senior officials demanding clarification from EOCO.
The party's General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has called for Mr Aboagye's immediate release if no offence has been established, or for him to be formally charged before a competent court if investigators believe an offence has been committed.
The NPP has also announced plans to stage a march to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office on Monday, July 13, to demand an explanation for the reported arrest and to call for due process to be observed.
At the time of publication, EOCO had not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
